Temporary Service Issues after Moving from a 4.0 or Older Plan to a Republic 5.0 Plan

Symptoms

  • Unable to receive some calls
  • Unable to receive some text messages
  • Unable to text using cellular

Environment

  • Service lines that recently moved from 4.0 and older plans to Republic 5.0 plans.
  • After activation confirmation email received

Description

Because Republic 4.0 and older numbers are technically VOIP (wireline, landline) numbers, they are treated differently in the porting process by networks.  This leads to a delay after the 5.0 plan is activated where the legacy service is not yet completely disconnected.  This delay is usually less than 5 days and manifests itself with both the new 5.0 SIM and the older SIM each having partial service:

The legacy SIM/Phone

  • Continues to receive texts/calls from numbers that are not on our 5.0 service (or from carriers that operate on the same network)
  • Continues to have data
  • Can make outbound calls

The new 5.0 SIM/Phone

  • Only receives inbound texts/calls from numbers that are on our 5.0 service (or from carriers that operate on the same network)
  • Can only send outbound texts to numbers that are on our 5.0 service (or to carriers that operate on the same network)
  • Has data
  • Can make outbound calls

Resolution

This issue resolves after several days with the legacy SIM/phone becoming completely inactive for cellular service or being assigned a new number.  In the meantime:

If you have one functioning phone:

  • Keep whichever SIM in your phone is more important based on who communicates with you
  • Swap to the older SIM to check for missed calls/messages
  • Once the older SIM stops working on cell or is assigned a new number, the number transfer has fully completed and your 5.0 service will be fully functional
  • Do not cancel the legacy line to attempt to solve the issue - doing so will make matters worse

If you have two functioning phones:

  • Keep a SIM in each phone and monitor them both during this period

Additional Notes

Please ensure your 5.0 phone is set up correctly to avoid additional service issues.
