Receiving "Error retrieving information from server. [DF-DFERH-01]" Message in the Google Play Store

Symptoms

  • "Error retrieving information from server. [DF-DFERH-01]"
  • Unable to update an app in the Google Play Store

Environment

Resolution

First, ensure that the google account you are using in the Google Play Store, is not a restricted account (e.g., a work or school account)

For the phones running Android 4.4.4 Kitkat through to Android 7.1 Nougat:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap on Apps
  3. Scroll down and tap on the Google Play Store app
  4. Tap on Force Stop
  5. Tap on Ok
  6. Tap on Storage
    • Note: On a Motorola phone using anything prior to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you don't need to tap on Storage
  7. Tap on Clear Cache
  8. Tap on Clear Data
  9. Tap on Ok

For phones on Android 8.0+ Oreo:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app
  2. Tap on Apps & notifications
  3. Tap on See all X apps
  4. Scroll down and tap on the Google Play Store app
  5. Tap on Force Stop
  6. Tap on Ok
  7. Tap on Storage
  8. Tap on Clear Cache
  9. Tap on Clear Data
  10. Tap on Ok

Cause

This is an error resulting from the Google Play Store process in charge of downloading and updating apps.
