Answer
An "SSID" is the technical term for a WiFi network's "network name." In most situations, the network name would be visible on the phone before connecting via WiFi settings.
On many routers, you may be able to setup the network so that the SSID is "hidden." A hidden SSID won't show in a list of "available" WiFi networks, even if it were in range of the phone.
Additional Notes
Once connected to a network with a hidden SSID, the phone will show the network name while connected to the network. The network name will also show in the list of saved networks while not connected.
