What is IPv4 and IPv6?

Environment

  • WiFi router
  • Router Firmware/Software

Answer

IPv4 stands for Internet Protocol version 4 and IPv6 would be version 6. When a device accesses the internet it is assigned a specific IP (Internet Protocol) address. Due to the number of phones, tablets, and computers online IPv4 addresses are running out; thus the need to create additional IP addresses with IPv6.

Additional Notes

Routers configured to use IPv6 may not work well with WiFi calling. We recommend checking to see if your router can be configured to use only IPv4. This may be checked via the router model links below or with your internet service provider.
