Why Does Replying to a Voicemail Message Dial an Unusable Phone Number: (737) 874-2833?

Environment

Answer

The phone number (737) 874-2833, spells out the word RESTRICTED on a standard phone dial pad. Often this phone number is used as a placeholder by a blocked caller ID in place of the real incoming phone number.

Voicemail messages that are replied to in this way have recorded RESTRICTED as the number that the call originated from. Thus when a call back is attempted the phone number the phone attempts to use is (737) 874-2833 rather than the real number.

Additional Notes

If you know the phone number, you should be able to manually dialing it without issue.
