Cellular data is how a smartphone accesses the internet when it is not connected to WiFi. Some activities such as streaming video use more cell data than others. Activities that do not use up as much data would be things like checking and sending text-based emails, browsing articles on the web and using turn-by-turn navigation. It is a common misconception that making phone calls and sending text messages uses cellular data. Calls and messages do not use data at all.
