Check the amount of available space on your phone

Your phone will need enough space to download and install the update. This update is around 378MB to download, but you’ll need to have at least 850MB of space available in order for your phone to run properly.

To check how much space you have:

  1. Tap Apps
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Storage
  4. The amount of free space is listed under Available

Factory reset your phone

This will put your phone back to its original factory state, and will erase all personal data on your phone, and will free up as much available storage space as possible. Make sure you’ve followed the above steps to back up any personal info prior to performing a factory reset. Once ready, follow these instructions to perform a factory reset.

Charge your phone

Plug your phone in to charge, or make sure your battery is at least 50% charged before installing system updates

Install the Update

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap System updates
  3. Tap Update Motorola software
  4. If the update is available to you, you'll see a pop-up notification asking you to download
  5. Tap Download
  6. When the download is complete, tap Install now
  7. After the software is installed, your phone will restart automatically

Additional Notes

If you don't have apps set to automatically update, you'll need to update them manually through the  Google Play Store. (Be sure to check for any updates to the Republic Wireless App!)

The Moto E1 software update may require additional steps which are discussed in Moto E (1st Gen.) Lollipop 5.1 System Update
