- Update phones from Android 4.4.4 to Android 5.1
Environment
- Moto E1
- Moto X1
- Android 4.4.4 KitKat
Procedure
Check the amount of available space on your phone
Your phone will need enough space to download and install the update. This update is around 378MB to download, but you’ll need to have at least 850MB of space available for your phone to run properly.
To check how much space you have:
- Tap Apps
- Tap Settings
- Tap Storage
- The amount of free space is listed under Available
Back up your files
How to Back Up Contacts, Photos, Videos, Apps, Music, Messages, or Other Miscellaneous Files
Factory reset your phone
This will put your phone back to its original factory state, and will erase all personal data on your phone, and will free up as much available storage space as possible. Make sure you’ve followed the above steps to back up any personal info before performing a factory reset.
Charge your phone
Plug your phone in to charge, or make sure your battery is at least 50% charged before installing system updates
Install the Update
- Open Settings
- Tap System updates
- Tap Update Motorola software
- If the update is available to you, you'll see a pop-up notification asking you to download
- Tap Download
- When the download is complete, tap Install now
- After the software is installed, your phone will restart automatically
