Hybrid Calling

Hybrid Calling is just like a hybrid car, only traditional carriers are the oil companies. We're the first-ever wireless provider to bundle WiFi calling with access to cellular whenever you need it.

Your Republic Wireless membership includes calling, texting, and data over WiFi and Sprint's cellular network. If there isn’t any WiFi around– no problem, your Republic smartphone just switches itself over to cellular.

Note: The $5 WiFi only plan doesn't include any cellular service and the $10 Base Plan doesn't include cellular data.

Hybrid Calling relies on you being connected to WiFi. We require that you sign into at least one WiFi network when you first turn on your phone.

What's the catch?

Actually, you’re the catch! It’s easy to be a WiFi person.

Research shows that most people are around WiFi networks 60% of the time. While other carriers try to hide the true cost of data, we decided to create a service catered to those of us that like to save money.

If that’s you, then all you have to do is set up your phone to automatically access a WiFi network. Our unique Hybrid Calling technology takes care of the rest.

  • Tip: Check out our reference guides for WiFi for devices running on Lollipop and KitKat as well as for the DEFY XT.

Wherever WiFi is available, you have a choice to use it. Add hotspots when you discover them to build your own network. It’s your phone. It’s your service. Change the way it works!

Other than you, there’s no catch. The Hybrid Calling technology embedded within Republic's phones automatically routes calls over ubiquitous and cheap WiFi, rather than expensive cellular networks. That’s why service is as low as $5 per month (plus taxes and surcharges).

Phone numbers

  • When you first join Republic and add a new line of service,
you'll be assigned a phone number based on your billing ZIP code. (While we have significant amounts of number inventory, we can’t guarantee specific numbers due to availability.)
  • If you're upgrading or replacing your existing phone,
your phone number will automatically transfer to your new phone upon activation when you first turn on your new phone. See How to Use the Online Store for more info.
  • To transfer an existing phone number to Republic,

International service

Republic does not consider calls or texts to Canadian numbers to be international calling (including MMS for supported carriers).  This means you can make outbound calls and texts to the 50 U.S. states and Canada under Republic's plan.

In addition, you can make outbound cellular calls to Per Call Countries/Territories. Per Call Countries/Territories include Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Johnston Atoll, Midway Atoll, and the Wake Island. Republic currently includes outbound calls to Per Call Countries/Territories as part of our monthly calling plans but reserves the right to charge up to $0.50 per minute. For Republic Wireless phones with Android OS versions prior to 5.1, Per Call Countries/Territories outbound cellular calling will not work if caller ID is blocked.

Your Republic Wireless phone can place or receive calls and texts (including MMS for supported carriers) over WiFi from anywhere in the world to any U.S., Canadian or Per Call Country/Territory phone number.

Tip: You can read up more about MMS and SMS in the following resources: MMS (Picture/Video Messaging) for Lollipop, MMS (Picture/Video Messaging) for KitKat, SMS (Text Messaging) for Lollipop, SMS (Text Messaging) for KitKat and SMS (Text Messaging) for Motorola DEFY XT.

You can also use an international phone card to place calls using your Republic Wireless phone.

FAQ

Note: Republic Wireless is a VoIP company, and as such, our numbers are classified as landline rather than mobile. This may cause delays transferring to other providers and/or may be excluded from free mobile-to-mobile calling or messaging with other service providers' plans.

How do I know which plan is right for me?

You can find tons of information on the Republic Wireless Plans.

The current $5 Wifi Only plan and the current $10 Base Plans are duplicated in our Republic Wireless 2.0 plans suite. The $10 Cellular Talk & Text plan got a name change to the Base Plan, and acts as a base for our 2.0 plans plus cell data buckets. The Base Plan is still the same - $10 a month for WiFi calls, texts and data; and cell talk and text when not connected to WiFi.

The Plans 2.0 suite is eligible for the Republic Refund™ program. This means that you can purchase one-time data buckets when you need them, and you’ll get credited for any unused cellular data on your next bill cycle date. Please note, in order to use the new buckets of data, you will need to switch to the $10 Base Plan in the Republic Wireless 2.0 suite of plans, which includes the ability to add cellular data.

I'm having issues with my Republic service, what do I do?

Occasionally, Republic services and features will be unavailable, usually for maintenance. To check the status of features such as calling, texting, our online store, visit Republic Wireless Status. (You can also find Republic service status at the top of the Republic Help page.)

The Republic Health and Wellness will also detail out any issues currently impacting Republic members as well as timeline for fixes and possible workarounds.

  • Tip: Check Republic Wireless Release Notes for information regarding fixes and app versions to see if the issue you're experiencing has been resolved with a recent app update.

If you have specific questions about your plan or service, Getting Help from Republic has more info on contacting us for help.

I have DSL or satellite internet at home, will Republic work on that?

It depends on the speed of the connection. Check out WiFi (for Moto X (1st and 2nd Gen.), Moto G, and Moto E) or WiFi for Motorola DEFY XT for more info on WiFi bandwidth requirements for an optimal experience with Republic.

Is 911 service available on the WiFi-only plan?

Yes. 911 service is available on all plans, even if you aren't connected to WiFi. For more info, please see Emergency Services.

Is 411 available with Republic?

Currently, 411 is not a supported feature with Republic, although it's something we may offer in the future.  In the meantime, you can use White Pages or Yellow Pages from your phone's browser. If you're looking for restaurants, cafes, bars, or attractions in your area, there are many apps available in the Google Play Store.

Can MMS be sent on the $10 Base Plan when not connected to WiFi?

Republic is thrilled to let you know that MMS will work on the $10 Base Plan when you don't have WiFi. A lot of collaboration occurred between Republic and Motorola to provide a novel way that enables MMS in this manner and we believe that you, the member, wins in a big way. Check out Is MMS available? for more info.

Are MMS messages included with the plans?

MMS are included with all of our plans except the $19 or $29 DEFY XT plans.

What limitations are there to data?

We’ve created a Data Usage Policy that allows for more flexibility than any other provider in the industry—while allowing us to keep costs down for all of our members. Check it out for more info.

Do I need to buy minutes from Sprint or anyone else?

No. We're the first-ever wireless provider to bundle WiFi calling with access to cellular whenever you need it.
