How to Install System Updates (From KitKat)

If your device is currently running on Lollipop, you can find the system update installation instructions here: How to Install System Updates (From Lollipop)

What are system updates?

System updates bring new features and improvements to Republic phones through upgrades to newer versions of the Android operating system. You may see system updates called OTA updates in the Community. "Over the air" updates are delivered directly to your phone through WiFi.

When's the next system update? When are we getting the next version of Android?

We always want to give you the best operating system we can. Any change to our phones' ROM requires an over-the-air (OTA) update, and that means we need to go through the certification process. We need all key partners, from carrier to manufacturer, to be on board to make future updates possible and timely. While we wish there was a magical “go faster” button we could push, we haven’t invented it yet.

We'd love to tell you our grand long-term Android updating plans, but there can be timeline changes. We don't want to announce a date, then have it change - possibly multiple times - before the update's ready for Republic.

When we update to a newer version of Android, we'll make an announcement, and you'll see the update on your phone. For more info on the latest system updates, check out Republic Health and Wellness and Republic Wireless Release Notes.

Check your phone's Android version

To see which version of Android your phone is currently using, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Apps.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under System, tap About phone.
  4. Under Android Version, you'll see the version number listed.

Before installing an update

  • Make sure your phone is not rooted.
Operating system updates are designed to work with the phone's original software. If your device is rooted or modified, we can't guarantee that the update will work properly or be able to predict its effect on your Republic device. See Rooting and User Modification for more info.
  • Clear your phone's cache.
See Clearing the Cache (KitKat 4.4.4) for instructions.
  • Charge your phone.
Plug your phone in to charge, or make sure your battery is at least 50% charged before installing system updates. See Charge My Phone for more info.

  • Connect to a WiFi network.
Your phone must be connected to WiFi to install system updates. See WiFi (KitKat) for more info.

  • Check the amount of available space on your phone.
Your phone will need enough space to download and install the update. The amount of space needed for a system update varies and will be listed in the system update message on your phone before you download the update.

To check the available space on your phone:

1. Go to Apps.

2. Tap Settings.

3. Under Device, tap Storage.

4. The amount of free space is listed under Available.

Install an update

You'll receive a notification when it is time to update your phone to a new version of Android.

Keep in mind:

  • For a successful installation, you must be connected to WiFi, and we recommend installing system updates when your battery is at least 50% charged.
  • Allow your phone to finish updating before attempting other phone functions (such as calling or using other apps.)
