Adjust or turn off radios

The easiest way to keep track of your radios is to use the Power Control widget.

To add this widget to your Home screen, tap and hold on the Home screen, then tap Android Widgets > Power Control. The widget bar will now be on your Home screen, which allows you to turn on and off any of the radios on your phone.

You can also add an Airplane mode toggle widget to your Home screen by tapping and holding on the Home screen > Motorola Widgets > Airplane mode toggle

You can also control your phone's radios through Settings:

GPS

It's best for battery life to shut off GPS when not in use. To turn off GPS, follow these steps:

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Location & Security
  2. Under My Location, tap to uncheck Use GPS satellites.

You may also notice increased battery drain if you're running the FM Radio while running with GPS in a rural area.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a low battery user, but you can turn it off when not in use to save battery. To turn Bluetooth off, follow these steps:

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Wireless & networks
  2. Tap to uncheck Bluetooth.

WiFi

If you're not in range of WiFi, you can turn WiFi off to save battery. To turn WiFi off, follow these steps:

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Wireless & networks
  2. Uncheck WiFi by tapping once.

Turn off or reduce the frequency of push notifications

Receiving new info, such as incoming email messages and app updates, requires constant communication between your phone and the server. Instead of using push notifications, you can choose to pull messages only when you need to.

Reduce frequency of push notifications

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Accounts & sync
  2. Uncheck Auto-sync.

Turn off push notifications

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Accounts & sync
  2. Uncheck Background data.

Use more WiFi!

WiFi is less taxing on your battery than using 3G or 4G service. So if you're accessing online content, use WiFi instead of cellular connectivity whenever possible. You can join a wireless network at home or the office, or use a public WiFi hotspot at places like cafés, hotel lobbies, or airport lounges.

With the Wi-Fi+ app, hotspot login credentials will automatically save to your DEFY XT, so you'll only have to sign in the first time you access a particular hotspot.

Know your apps

Some apps on your phone are from the manufacturer and a lot more apps come from other developers and publishers. These apps have varying levels of quality and efficiency. Here are some guidelines to mitigating battery drain from apps:

  • Research apps before installing
Always research your apps before you download them. Read reviews and check the amount of stars the developer or app has garnered.
  • Download apps one at a time
Don't download too many apps at one time. This will make it hard to know which app may be causing a problem.
  • Check sync frequency
Apps that require frequent synchronization of info with the Internet or GPS may cause issues. See Google's guide on account synchronization for more info.

Android also provides a helpful app that breaks down which apps use the most battery.

To view battery use by app, tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > Applications > Battery use.

Use fewer widgets and Active Wallpapers

Some widgets require constant sync of data or are constantly changing. This is also the issue with Active Wallpapers. These should also be avoided if you want to get the most out of your battery.

Take care of your battery

Many complaints about battery life come from poorly-cared-for batteries. If the battery has been degraded through misuse, it may need to be replaced. The DEFY XT's lithium-ion battery needs some management to stay in peak performance, including these steps:

  • Charge the phone fully before initial use.

  • Don't let the battery drain completely before charging it.
Discharging a lithium-ion battery will ruin it.

  • Don't let the phone get too hot or too cold.
Room temperature is best. Ideally, smartphones work best from around 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit.

  1. Tap icon_menu.pngMenu > Settings > About phone.
  2. Tap Phone updates > System updates.
  3. If there's an update available, tap Download
